The producer of the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Ryan Murphy,” has replied to Erik Menendez’s criticism. Erik, serving a life sentence for the murder of his parents, claimed the show is not accurate about his life or the circumstances surrounding the crime.
Erik Menendez said that his brother Lyle and himself are shown on the show negatively. He feels the show promotes old falsehoods and undermines the advancement in knowledge of male assault victims.
Ryan Murphy defended his job, claiming he managed the narrative with care. He said that the show aims to portray a fair story and comprises several points of view. Murphy also noted that Erik attacked the show without first seeing it.
Murphy clarified that the Menendez brothers’ abuse allegations take the front stage in the show. He claimed the show allows them to present their side of the tale. Murphy feels that all points of view—including those of the parents—should be displayed.
Viewers have engaged in a lot of conversation around the argument. While some agree with Murphy’s strategy, others back Erik’s point of view. Certainly, the debate has raised increased awareness of the series.
